Church 101
Find a Good Local Church
I highly recommend physically going to a local church for service. Here’s exactly how to find a good one, step by step.
5 Steps to
Your Church
Give yourself a few weeks for this. The goal is a Bible-based church you’ll keep showing up to.
Search Locally
Type “churches near me” into Google or Maps and write down five within driving distance.
Check Beliefs
Read each church website’s “What We Believe” page and make sure they’re Bible-based churches.
If you’re new to Christianity, you’ll soon notice there are different denominations. They all agree that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins, but there are second-tier issues they disagree on.
Watch Services Online
Watch one full sermon from each remaining church on YouTube, or on their website if they have it.
Narrow Down & Visit 1 Church a Week
Pick your top three based on the sermons you watched, then visit one each week.
Pick Your Favorite
Choose the church you’ll commit to, and keep showing up.
Important: watch out for “another gospel”
Some churches say they’re Bible-based, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are. One type of preaching, called the Prosperity Gospel, teaches that God wants you to be healthy, wealthy, and never suffer, and that you pray to God to get what you want in this life. That is not the gospel. We are promised tribulation and taught not to care about the things of this world, so don’t fall into that trap.
No Church
Near You?
If there’s no church near you, or health reasons keep you from going, you can be a digital disciple. Treat it like a routine and show up at the same time every single week. These are the ones I recommend:
Found your church?
Join a group.
Once you’re in, most churches have Bible studies or small groups you can join. I highly recommend you do.
